National Film Award-winning director Shed Ohiduzzaman Diamond hoped that Bangladesh government would protect the film industry from decadence as well as from the aggression of foreign films.
Diamond, who received the award for 2009 as the director and scriptwriter for his second film ‘Gangajatra’ on July 23 in Dhaka, further hoped that the government would equip the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation, widely known as FDC, with modern technology. We have talented and enthusiastic filmmakers and also have a large number of film-loving audience’, Diamond told Banglanews24.com just before the award-giving ceremony and continued, ‘if the government provides modern technology and proper environment for the people related to films, the industry will be more able to play role in enriching our culture and heritage'. Diamond's ‘Gangajatra’ has received national awards in eight different categories, including the Best Hero (Ferdous), the Best Heroine (Poppy), the Best Child Artiste (Syeda Ohida Sabrina), the Best Art Director (Kalanta), the Best Makeup Man (Khalilur Rahman), the Best Costume (Dilip Singh). Asked about his feeling at the moment, he smiled and said, "I am, no doubt, feeling happy. I must say I feel happier because of the success of my daughter Sabrina, who has also got a national award as a child artiste for her performance in the film.’ Diamond recalled the scene of his girl’s dead body wrapped in a ‘chatai’. He said, ‘During the shooting, I forgot my fatherhood. I was strict in shooting as a director. Now, I feel happy as a father. The director did not forget to thank his crew. ‘Credit goes to all the members of my crew, casts, and well-wishers. They worked amid extreme humid condition during the shooting of ‘Gangajatra’ on the bank of Padma. In making the film, the director was influenced by reading a report on the denial of the social elite for the proper funeral of a sex-worker. ‘I have tried to uphold the rights of poor people who have been exploited over the years. I have tried to show my audience that the sex-workers should not be untouchable after their death. They have rights to be treated as human beings.About the response from the audience, Diamond said that though the film was not screened widely due to financial reasons, the decision of the jury-board had made it a success.I thank both the government and the jury-board for their selection of the film for awards. Now, I hope the audience will feel interested to see the movie,’ he added. The director, who is currently busy with his film ‘Antardhan’, said that his upcoming movie would be a tribute to his nation. ‘The upcoming film will symbolically be a presentation of the people who have been suffering for water on the bank of once-mighty river Padma.Diamond, hailed from Chapainawabganj, earns international reputation for his debut film ‘Nacholer Rani’.
