Autism conference ends with hopes, aspirations



A landmark autism conference ended in the city Tuesday with fresh hopes and aspirations generated among the families with autistic children in and outside the country, as the meet chalked out joint collaboration for their well being. Now is the time to create greater awareness, acceptance and understanding of autism spectrum disorders and mental health conditions in South Asia, said chief architect of the conference Saima Wazed Hossain in the concluding session at Rupiahs Bengal hotel. Nearly 370 participants from home and abroad took part in the conference, first of its kind in recent memory, as India`s ruling Congress Party chief, Sonia Gandhi, opened it Monday. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina spoke as the special guest at the conference which would be followed by a three-day training workshop for parents of autistic children, psychologists and physicians. The conference that drew a huge attention from highest levels of politics in Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and some other countries in South and Southeast Asia also got promise from the World Health Organization (WHO)representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia spoke high about the conference and promised anew to spearhead the cause of disability in their respective countries.
