Indra Gandhi to be awarded Bangladesh’s highest honor



The government decided to award former Indian Prime Minister Indra Gandhi highest honor for her outstanding contribution to the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. A total of 47 foreign personalities and organizations are on the honors list made in three categories to accord them formal recognition for their roles in Bangladesh’s independence.

The late Gandhi, who threw full weight of her government behind the Bengals’ war of independence from Pakistan, earns the highest honor titled Bangladeshi Swadhinata Sanmanona. To other honors on the list are ‘Bangladeshi Muktijuddha Sanmanona’ and ‘MuktiJuddha Moisture Sanmanona., The decision was taken at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.

President ZIllur Rah man would hand over the award to India’s ruling Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, also daughter-in-law of Indra, at a formal ceremony on July 25 at the Bangabhavan presidential palace. Prime Minister’s press secretary Abdul Kalam Azad disclosed the decision after the cabinet meeting.
